Synergy

Oil and Chalk pastel on canvas
64 1⁄2 x 43 1⁄4 in
This oil painting marks the beginning of my MFA career. I entered my program using this series as a launchpad for curiosity and as a guide to where to go next in my
practice. Nostalgia, loss, and expressing grief are where I landed for my first semester. “Synergy” is a significant piece of this body of work. It’s an effort to let go of perfectionism and let the painting happen, but it also taught me a lot about how formulaic compositions can be a trap for “letting go”. It was inspired by nostalgia and attempts to grasp a memory. It has now become a reminder in my practice of what nostalgia is and does, within the question that drives it: “What does it mean to be whole when something vital is missing?”
