Montego Bay
Jahniah Kum
Oil and Chalk pastel on canvas
41 3/4 x 33 in
My family archive and albums offer plenty of places to launch from when starting a new series or project. This painting, in particular, was developed around my first moments visiting my mother's country, Jamaica, and a place I later came to know as “home” too. I have my best memories here in Jamaica and often associate it with my childhood more than my upbringing in New York.
This evokes the dusty, child-like hand on the wooden floor, for example, with chalk pastel, oil pastel, and oil paint. I wanted to have fun with shape, perspective, and material. Finding ways to manipulate what I think I know about material, painting, and my
memories. Montego Bay is one of the paintings in this series that inspired me to turn towards burlap and other materials to see how they can alchemize in my
practice.
