Lady Love

Lady Love centers Erzulie Freda, the Haitian Lwa associated with love, beauty, luxury, desire,
and femininity. Reimagined through a darker, richer complexion, the piece questions how colonialism,
colorism, Catholic influence, and fear have shaped the way divinity is represented in Black and diasporic
communities.
French lace references colonial influence and reclamation, while metal stars gesture toward Erzulie Dantor,
Freda’s counterpart, whose energy is associated with protection, force, iron, grit, and alcohol. Surrounded by
offerings, the altar-like frame invites the viewer to reconsider what they have been taught to fear
