Daline
Jahniah Kum
Oil on canvas
36 x 24 in
Like most of this series, this painting is inspired by my family's archive. Daline is my older cousin of about two decades, and she was always someone I looked up to. I still find her to be amazing. I wanted to paint something almost as beautiful as her. In this work, I
think the way she blends into the background is where the tension lies.
Daline was one of the earlier pieces in the series and has been re-stretched since 2023. Only using burnt umber and Ultramarine blue, I followed the philosophy of making do with what you have during my time at the Albany Barn as a resident artist. Daline and a few other pieces are “silhouettes” for this reason. I owned large tubes of these colors, and the ability to pull them cooler or warm allowed me to still “paint” during times of little to no resources.
