Aunty Babeth

Oil on canvas
36 x 32 in
This oil painting was created at the beginning of this series (2022). It pulls from a reference photo of my grandmother's best friend, Aunty Babeth. While painting this, I thought of the style, confidence, and cadence of Caribbean women. Aunty Babeth embodies the tomboyish style of most women on the island, and I wanted to represent that group of women who express themselves this way. In 2022, I didn't have
much funding for my studio practice. I only had big tubes of ultramarine blue and burnt umber to work with, so I mixed black. This series began with Aunty Babeth using the white negative space to represent taboos and later grew into a project exploring loss and taboos.
