Mark Anthony West
Booth 004Mark Anthony West is a contemporary self-taught painter whose work bridges culture,
movement, and human experience across continents. Based between Baltimore and Rio de
Janeiro, West creates expressive works shaped by global travel, urban life, and historical
reflection.
Originally studying History at New York University, West developed a deep interest in cultural
narratives, identity, and the ways societies preserve memory through art and storytelling.
Though formally trained in history rather than fine arts, he emerged as a self-taught artist whose
distinctive visual language combines bold color, layered textures, abstraction, and figurative
elements.
Having traveled to more than 45 countries, West draws continual inspiration from the people,
landscapes, architecture, and traditions encountered throughout his journeys. These
experiences inform paintings that explore themes of migration, resilience, spirituality,
community, and connection across cultures. His work reflects both the energy of global cities
and the intimacy of personal encounters, often blending influences from North America, Latin
America, Africa, and Europe.
Beyond his studio practice, West is also an active curator and cultural organizer, producing and
curating exhibitions between Baltimore, New York City, and Rio de Janeiro. He serves as
director of Art Space Vidigal, a Brazilian art house dedicated to fostering creative exchange,
supporting emerging artists, and building connections between international art communities.
